On july 29th, i happened to be in apple store during a power failure. as is typical on sundays, i had stayed in bed much longer then i should have. i finally decided to eat some lunch and go to the apple store in marlton to pick up a copy of drive genius. just after i got in my car, the clouds let loose with heavy rain. as i drove along route 73, a few blocks away from the the promenade at sagemore where the apple store in marlton is located, i reached an intersection where a traffic light was red. as i slowed to a stop, a jagged lightning bolt burst in front of me. the traffic light where i was about to stop began blinking yellow. when i entered the apple store, the lights were out, except for two in back of the store, above the genius bar. the windows in the front provided light for the rest of the store. all the imacs and cinema displays were off. thanks to battery power, the ipods on the display tables, the portable computers, and iphones were all on. roughly twenty customers were shopping there at the time. apple store employees were doing their best to provide the top-flight service one expects there. a few mac geniuses were hard at work, using laptops to assist some customers. i used an iphone to check movie times because i wanted to see a movie. the iphone was on at&t's edge network. the internet service was so slow; i gave up after five minutes. i got in line to buy a copy of drive genius. i filled out a form with my contact information, including my e-mail address and the product i wanted to buy. an employee took my form, the software, and my credit card. she filled out a hand-written credit card slip. another employee used her personal cell phone a motorola razr ; to verify my credit card. i was told an official receipt would be e-mailed to me because the printers were down. some other employees were using customers' cell phones to validate credit card purchases. none of the apple store's employees used an iphone to transact business. after i left the store, i drove to the ritz theater in voorhees to see what movies were playing. unfortunately, the movie i wanted to see had just started. oh well! i walked to a fuddruckers about a mile away and i ate lunch, then i walked back to my car. by the time i arrived home, it was around 6: 30pm. i checked my e-mail and a message from the sagemore apple store was waiting for me with a pdf copy of the receipt for the software i purchased. that's what i consider fantastic service! i spent half an hour in that apple store during that power failure. many stores were closed in that mall, but not the apple store! even without power, this apple store's employees provided the same firstrate customer service they always provide. i was impressed! steve jobs should be proud of every one of his employees at that store and Google.
