When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what i did at work. i told her i worked at the college that my job was to teach people how to draw. she stared back at me, incredulous, and said, "you mean they forget?" -howard ikemoto this past winter there was considerable attention in the media about fine arts education in our schools in new mexico, specifically in elementary schools. i proud to report that the aztec board of education has always supported fine arts education in our schools. our district considers music education, art education and drama our fine arts. please let me illustrate. from the time a student enters preschool or kindergarten they begin their music education. they attend music class every other day and are exposed to a rich and varied curriculum that teaches rhythm, voice, composition, expression and other technical components of music. i had the pleasure of observing a kindergarten music class this week. the teacher was teaching her students rhythm by teaching them to play the xylophone. there is a special place in heaven for elementary music teachers. she remained calm and patient while 20 five-year-olds produced a cacophony of sounds. one day in the not-todistant future these children will pick up a saxophone or a flute or an oboe and learn how to play easily thanks to their strong elementary music foundation. at middle school and high school, students select chorus or instrumental music. we have teachers in both arenas that were born to teach music. the most thrilling experience is to listen to the sixth grade beginning band in the fall and then hear them play again in may. our high school bands are both expressive and accomplished. last year two honor graduates selected to pursue a career in music thanks to the inspiration of their music teachers. art is another discipline students begin at an early age. as soon as fourth grade, students attend weekly art classes to participate in the process of making art to understand the elements of art: line, shape, form, color, and texture. by the time they reach high school, they have a choice of ceramics, visual arts and graphic design. this year the art teachers in aztec have transformed the board room into a student art gallery. we have all enjoyed two and three-dimensional art in a variety of mediums. later this month we will host the district art show at park avenue elementary school. if you have not had an opportunity to attend this event, i strongly urge you to go this year. bring the family. you will be thoroughly impressed with the quality of art produced by our students. the drama productions at aztec high school are second to none. each year students, staff and supporters work during the school day and well beyond to bring the community first-rate dramatic productions. students take leadership roles in all facets of the production: acting, set design and production, costume and script writing. they compete against their peers statewide and always score extremely well. in total, the district allocates no less than 9, 161 annually for fine arts education in our schools. in addition, mccoy and park avenue elementary schools received a grant for , 080 from the new mexico arts council for additional arts at their schools. we have put our money where our mouth is and have supported arts education in aztec. in return we receive high quality performances and art shows that showcase our students' talents. in the words of president george w. bush: "from music and dance to painting and sculpting, the arts allow us to explore new worlds and to view life from another perspective. they also encourage individuals to sharpen their skills and abilities and to nurture their imagination and intellect and poker chip sets.
